This little book is a Qing dynasty primer on traditional Chinese gynecology. It covers the main patterns of menstrual diseases, pre- and postpartum diseases, various types of abnormal vaginal discharges, and a number of miscellaneous female breast and genital diseases. When it comes to the treatment of these conditions, Ye focuses on a core repertoire of the most famous formulas in Chinese medicine, such as Si Wu Tang (Four Materials Decoction), Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Er Chen Tang (Two Aged [Ingredients] Decoction), Xiao Yao San (Rambling Powder), and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Supplement the Center & Boost the Qi Decoction). Ye shows how one can treat the full range of gynecological complaints by modifying these well-known Chinese medical formulas with various additions and subtractions. While there is more to be said about Chinese gynecology, if one memorizes the material in this book, one will have a firm foundation in traditional Chinese gynecology. In addition, Ye’s emphasis on careful pattern discrimination and not being doctrinaire about pre- and postpartum prohibitions are important aspects of professional care in Chinese gynecology which are important to understand. Further, Ye Heng-yin emphasizes the use of only a small core repertoire of famous Chinese medicinal formulas which he then masterfully modifies in numerous ways to fit a large variety of situations. The vast majority of formulas recommended in this book are those which form the standard curriculum at Western colleges of Chinese medicine and with which even beginners are expected to be familiar.
