Trade paperback book
This is a compilation of papers on the use of what the authors term “TCD,” traditional Chinese drugs. Each paper follows the approach of modern basic medical research. The first section provides an introductory history and explanation for readers unfamiliar with TCM. Two further papers report on modern experiments leading to standard diagnostic criteria for pi, kidney, yin, and yang deficiency. This section concludes with research concerning constitution-related characteristics and susceptibilities. The second section reports pharmacological research into TCD. Among the subjects reported are the cardiotonic steroids in TCD, ginsenosides, a new drug for hepatitis derived from schizandra, other drugs derived from natural substances, and the effects of Essence Restoring Decoction on aging in mice. The third and final section concentrates on the treatment of both biomedically-defined and traditionally-defined diseases: kidney deficiency, aplastic anemia, leukemia, infertility, neoplastic diseases, and “sick sinus syndrome.” Each chapter is in research paper format and includes English translations of the references.
